Ending Plastic Pollution at the Magbon-Segun Shoreline
On Thursday, June 5, 2025, Lekki Port commemorated World Environment Day under the theme “Ending Plastic Pollution,” with a beach clean-up exercise at the Magbon-Segun community shoreline in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. The event brought together over 300 participants, including staff, local residents, and representatives from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), and the Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
This year’s observance underscores Lekki Port’s commitment to sustainability and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The clean-up saw enthusiastic participation from members of the Oke-Segun and Magbon-Segun communities, alongside Lekki Port staff and environmental stakeholders. Working together, volunteers cleared large amounts of plastic and non-biodegradable waste that had accumulated along the shoreline. Clean-up kits, including gloves, waste bags, and tools, were distributed to ensure safe and efficient collection.
The initiative not only improved the hygiene and aesthetic condition of the shoreline but also served as a platform for raising awareness about the dangers of marine pollution. It reinforced Lekki Port’s role as a responsible corporate citizen actively promoting environmental consciousness and sustainable development in its host communities.
The event was a resounding success and served as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through collaboration and shared responsibility. Lekki Port remains dedicated to creating long-term environmental impact and advancing a future where sustainability is at the heart of port operations.
