LEKKI PORT COMMEMORATES WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2026

…Promoting Environmental Stewardship Through Community Action

On Friday, June 5, 2026, Lekki Port marked World Environment Day with a large-scale beach clean-up exercise at the Idotun Community shoreline in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. The initiative brought together more than 400 participants, including members of the host community and representatives of key environmental and maritime institutions.

The exercise formed part of Lekki Port’s ongoing efforts to support environmental sustainability and encourage collective action towards addressing pollution in coastal communities. It also reinforced the organisation’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those focused on environmental protection and sustainable development.

Representatives from Lekki Freeport Terminal (LFT), the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the African Marine Environment Sustainability Initiative (AFMESI), Port Health Services, Lekki LCDA, and the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) joined community members and other stakeholders in the clean-up exercise, demonstrating a shared commitment to protecting the environment.

The activity focused on tackling plastic pollution along the shoreline while raising awareness about the importance of responsible waste management and sustainable environmental practices. Participants worked together to remove waste from the coastal area, helping create a cleaner, healthier environment for the community.

Beyond the clean-up itself, the event served as a platform for engagement on environmental responsibility and the role individuals, organisations, and communities can play in safeguarding natural ecosystems. The strong turnout reflected growing awareness of the need for collaborative solutions to environmental challenges.

Through initiatives such as this, Lekki Port continues to foster positive environmental impact within its host communities while strengthening partnerships with stakeholders committed to sustainability. The World Environment Day clean-up exercise highlights the value of collective action in creating lasting change and advancing a cleaner, more sustainable future.
